MichaelMichael Sullivan- Owner/Personal Trainer

I bring a heavy nutritional edge to my Personal Training services, due to my background in hospitality where I spent 14 years working as a professional chef. I’m a REPs registered Personal Trainer and studied at the New Zealand Institute of Sport in 2011.
You can expect professional services when you put your goals in my hands. I have an organised and structured method to my personal training which means you get to where you want to be quickly.
My nutrition background will help you stay on track with recipes, techniques and ideas. Exercise is only part of the equation to any health & fitness goal.

I used to be a very stressed, over-worked and unhealthy person and decided things had to change! That’s when I took the steps toward a career in personal training, and have never looked back. The first few weeks in changing the routine are the hardest but with my direction you too can get to where you need to be.

I entered the exciting world of health & fitness 6 years ago when I studied to be a Personal Trainer part time in the evenings while working full time in my admin job. I have always wanted a job where I can help people and make a difference in people’s lives. I have learnt that Personal Training is not a job for me it is a passion and I love everything about it. The more I learn the more I love it. After being a mobile trainer and using my garage for 12 months as a small studio, Michael and I made the huge leap in Dec 2014 and moved into a facility and Focus was born!

Michael & I don’t shy away from a challenge & we both have a huge vision for Focus in the future which is very exciting!

I am a trainer at Focus for various team training sessions, one-on-one PT sessions, pre & post natal assistance and help out at PT in the park on Saturdays.

My own ongoing journey to better health and fitness has given me many tools & knowledge which I pass onto clients to help them in their own journeys. I have been very unfit & overweight before due to poor lifestyle choices. I was very lucky & won a spot in a running group about 3.5 years ago & I honestly couldn’t even run for 5 minutes! I was terrified. But I went on to run 3 half marathons and trained for all of them through the depths of Winter at 6.20am 3-4 times per week. This was at a time where early mornings & me did not mix well! But I persisted & I won. I realised at this time I was capable of pushing myself beyond the boundaries which were restricting me & ultimately holding me back from really awesome opportunities.

Now I get up most days at 5.15am & train either at Focus in one of our team training sessions or head up the hills for a walk/run/stair climb session & dabble in hot yoga & this year I have started meditation which I find fantastic. I believe we all deserve to live our best life, but it’s progress not perfection & seeing it as a journey not a start & an end. Always work towards a better version of yourself through better mobility, strength (mental or physical), health, well-being & take time out to enjoy life.

I am always happy to chat, answer questions or assist in any way I can so please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Since gaining my Diploma in Sport (Elite Sports Performance) I have had 7 years in the Fitness industry. Most of that time has been spent in a Gym Manager/Personal Trainer role in Methven but in recent years my involvement has been with Focus in the group training setting. Through these experiences I’ve witnessed and helped people of all abilities improve the way they move and how they feel about exercise which is hugely rewarding. I enjoy providing variety to those who attend my sessions whilst remaining focused on helping all of those involved get their body functioning better to increase their performance on the field/court and/or how they go about everyday tasks such as playing with their kids or grand-kids.

In high-school I was overweight and very unhealthy, frequently eating fast-food and staying up until the early hours of the morning watching movies. I was unfit, unmotivated and unwell. But since leaving high-school 6 years ago, I have personally experienced the dramatic benefits of exercise and the positive effects that it can have on wellbeing.
The desire to help others realise similar benefits motivated me to get qualified and take up Personal Training as a career.
I strongly believe in the importance of some form of strength training for all people, as it carries over to all aspects of physical life.
I especially hope to work with the retired/senior population over the coming years.
I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of increasing frailty and would like to help as many people as possible avoid spending their old age constrained to a chair.
If you’d like to become a stronger version of yourself, get in touch! I’d love to help you out in any way that I can.
